The doors to his apartment slid open, silently and effortlessly, and Tom Miyaki crossed the threshold for the first time in nearly a week. The main lights had been turned off, and the corridor was lit only by the cold blue of the emergency lights, slowly oscillating in step with the tones of the warning alarm.

"It's not going to be that simple," said Adam.

At this point, Tom realized just how much stress the decision had actually placed upon him. He slumped back against the elevator tube, for the second time in the last twenty-four hours. It was a dreadful thought that it was probably not the last time this would happen.

Whither Tranquility? is a science fiction story that I began in October 2009. This node is a table of contents for the evolving story, and should be updated regularly as new chapters get published.

It had been part of the plan from the beginning.

When the founders had gathered that first time, on a cold, clear winter day in New York, they had talked and talked. But what they understood better than anything was that they were never safe. Nowhere on Earth could give them the security they desired for what they had chosen to do. It wasn't like they hadn't looked. Adam, Henry, Lucius, even Kiyoko at the end had all torn across the globe searching for a place where they could start without constant risk from the rest of the world. It was not to be found.

It is a beautiful day.

Splice in. There's a brief instant of sheer coldness that flows over my mind. An icy wash, clearing everything before it. All goes dark, but only for that barest moment, and then...
