Projects

Rays bright gold and amber shone forth from flames
To light a wizened face and gilt goblet
And met cool greys a-streaming through clear panes.
'Gainst such warmth this e'er advancing winter bit.
Turn; behold that plain, so misty and so close
Just beyond these great walls and within see
A great many but half-shrouded stains rose
For dark war and shadow. Oh woe to we.
Rumble hard stone and crash beaten bone did
Straight pass into this room and break the still
Air.

If you haven't yet read part one of this digital painting walk-along, you are apt to be a little lost walking into this article. In that post, I covered the beginning half of my five-day production of "Halo". Now I'll be wrapping up this walk-along and giving some final notes on the project as a whole.

Welcome to part one of my walk-along tutorial of my most recent digital painting, "Halo". By reading this post and its continuation, you should gain an insight into what is involved in my process for digital painting, and hopefully this will help you to improve your own digital painting skills.

To make up for failing to maintain the Tuesday update cycle that I just pledged to follow last week, I will be publishing a longer-form post: a walk-along of my latest digital painting.

This painting, "Halo", was completed from a photo reference and took me 5 days, at an hour and a half per day, including the time I spent on taking notes for this walk-along. It was completed using a Wacom Graphire3 in Photoshop CS3. The final version, replicated at the top of this post, is 2400 by 1800 pixels and the PSD weighs in at an eighth of a gigabyte.

The doors to his apartment slid open, silently and effortlessly, and Tom Miyaki crossed the threshold for the first time in nearly a week. The main lights had been turned off, and the corridor was lit only by the cold blue of the emergency lights, slowly oscillating in step with the tones of the warning alarm.

On a pale, sandy tabletop,
Scattered widely,
Rest little discs of metal
Gleaming ever so mildly.

"It's not going to be that simple," said Adam.

At this point, Tom realized just how much stress the decision had actually placed upon him. He slumped back against the elevator tube, for the second time in the last twenty-four hours. It was a dreadful thought that it was probably not the last time this would happen.

Whither Tranquility? is a science fiction story that I began in October 2009. This node is a table of contents for the evolving story, and should be updated regularly as new chapters get published.

It had been part of the plan from the beginning.

When the founders had gathered that first time, on a cold, clear winter day in New York, they had talked and talked. But what they understood better than anything was that they were never safe. Nowhere on Earth could give them the security they desired for what they had chosen to do. It wasn't like they hadn't looked. Adam, Henry, Lucius, even Kiyoko at the end had all torn across the globe searching for a place where they could start without constant risk from the rest of the world. It was not to be found.
